Smythe & Jones is seeking a both an experienced litigation paralegal to manage a complex business and general civil litigation caseload and a family law paralegal.
As a business and civil litigation paralegal you will support two attorneys in their work production drafting correspondence, pleadings, discovery, and assist in all aspects of trial preparation. As a family law attorney you will support one attorney. At Smythe & Jones the paralegal is involved in all email communication with opposing counsel, tracks deadlines, and assures that the attorneys have all the support they need for efficient work production. A typical case load is 50 clients per attorney; therefore our paralegal cannot be overwhelmed by tracking up to 100 clients regularly. About half of the clients are litigation and half are non-litigation general business clients.
As the lead paralegal you will have a legal assistant who assists you in managing the litigation calendar and deadlines, however you will share a supervisory role for that legal assistant's work. You will not be doing the administrative work in the firm, rather you will do substantive legal work. You will be expected to be billable for a significant amount of your day. In managing cases, a particular amount of your work will be spent completing discovery and working with clients to obtain information necessary for discovery, then draft the final pleadings for attorney review. You will research law, write attorney memos and collaborate on summary judgment motions and responses.
Each day you will be expected to work on 5-10 different cases in order to progress them along, while handling any issues that arise in any other cases. Communication abilities are critical between paralegal and attorneys to keep work-flow reasonable and progressing at a steady pace. A paralegal that is precise both in thought and language, intuitive, detailed, efficient, and has a profound desire to finish everything to completion is the ideal candidate.
Smythe & Jones is a new law firm with two partners who have been practicing law separately for 28 years. These friends decided to join forces in the beginning of 2020 and combine their law practices. Smythe is a family law attorney and Jones is a civil business litigation attorney. There are three lawyers, three paralegals, and one legal assistant currently working at Smythe & Jones.
Our office is in Downtown Bellevue, we provide parking for all employees. We also offer employees health care coverage, dental, vision and we are working on starting a retirement plan this year.
We value work/life balance. While we do have big caseloads and work very hard during business hours, we insist that everyone to work no more than 40 hours a week. We do offer a flexible work schedule but find that the work is best done with everyone in the office communicating. We have a team approach, with shared responsibilities, and support one another. In a small office it is imperative that personalities do not clash so we will really look for a team player.
Our goal is to provide our clients with excellent legal services, promptly, efficiently, and exceeding their expectations all along the way. As a result, we strive to work hard for every client that comes through our door.
The salary range posted is the amount to start and includes training. We will evaluate the experience of each candidate to determine the salary.
4+ years as a litigation paralegal; prefer more experience but will consider less if your knowledge and ability to write pleadings and briefs is strong (I don't know how it could be without experience though)
Ability to analyze substantive legal issues
Excellent letter and brief writing skills
Expedient with work completion (be quick, but don't hurry)
Ability to track time throughout the day
Please don't apply unless you are extremely qualified, this is not an entry level position. That said, I don't want to miss out on someone incredible. So if this job is absolutely the job you have been searching for and you can convince me that you can get up to speed quickly and become the paralegal that we need within a few months, I may decide to hire someone without the 4 years of experience as a paralegal.
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: Competitive and Depends on your experience level
