Job Description
1. PRIMARY PURPOSE
The Modular Tooling Platform Designer is essential in shaping and enhancing PakTech's cutting-edge modular tooling platform. This role is focused on developing a scalable and reusable tooling ecosystem for injection-molded HDPE multipack handles and components. You'll lead the charge in establishing platform-based tooling strategies and high-efficiency asset utilization while still executing mold design.
2. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take ownership of PakTech's platform-based tooling strategy aligned with long-term product and manufacturing objectives.
- Design adaptable modular mold architectures that promote scalability, repeatability, and swift implementation across various product lines.
- Standardize common mold base strategies and interchangeable cavity systems to enhance efficiency and flexibility.
- Implement tooling reuse strategies to maximize asset effectiveness and limit unnecessary capital expenditures.
- Create and refine injection molds for HDPE multipack handles within the modular tooling framework, including complete mold layouts such as gating, cooling, venting, and ejection.
- Produce 3D models, assemblies, and detailed drawings in SolidWorks, concentrating on system-level design and manufacturability.
- Collaborate closely with Product Development, Manufacturing Engineering, and tooling vendors to ensure adherence to platform standards through design, build, and validation phases.
- Promote continuous improvement via DFM, tolerance analysis, and root-cause problem solving, emphasizing scalable, system-level strategies.
3. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage special projects assigned by the Industrial Design team.
- Perform additional duties as needed.
4. JOB/BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES
- Ability to think systemically in designing scalable, standardized solutions.
- Excellent communication skills capable of influencing cross-functional stakeholders.
- High attention to detail with a strong focus on consistency and repeatability.
- Effective time management and organizational capability.
- Adaptability to shifting priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Collaborative approach with cross-functional teams.
5. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tool Design, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience will be considered.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in plastic injection mold design, especially in high-volume or consumer packaging scenarios.
- Demonstrated expertise beyond mold design, particularly with modular tooling and reusable strategies.
- Proficient in SolidWorks, especially in complex assemblies and system-level designs.
- In-depth knowledge of injection molding processes, especially involving HDPE materials and high-volume production needs.
- Experience with DFM, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and fundamental mold construction principles.
- Capability to interpret engineering drawings and manufacturing requirements effectively.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills complemented by effective communication and teamwork abilities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in developing or scaling modular tooling platforms in a production setting.
- Knowledge of high-cavitation, high-throughput molding systems.
- Familiarity with hot runner systems, valve gates, and advanced cooling strategies.
- Proficiency with mold flow simulation tools, such as Moldflow or Moldex3D.
- Proven success in driving tooling standardization within an organization.
- Understanding of sustainable materials, including recycled HDPE.
- Background in consumer packaging, beverage systems, or similar high-volume industries.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, age, color, sex (including pregnancy), religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, military status, genetic information, or any other status protected by applicable laws or regulations.
